At our recent Opioid Task Force meeting, we discussed the rising threat of Bromazolam, a dangerous designer drug. This alarming substance has already been linked to a tragic death in our community. Bromazolam may be laced with fentanyl, making the drug even more potent and dangerous.
What You Need to Know:
- Bromazolam is a powerful benzodiazepine. Benzodiazepines are prescribed for conditions like anxiety, insomnia & seizures. Bromazolam is the brominated counterpart to the chlorinated drug alprazolam.
- Bromazolam is a highly potent and dangerous substance that poses significant health risks, particularly because it is often used without medical supervision. Public awareness and caution are essential to prevent its harmful effects.
- Dangers of Misusing Bromazolam: High risk of overdose, especially when combined with other central nervous system depressants like opioids or alcohol. Causes severe withdrawal symptoms. Significant impairment in cognitive & motor functions, loss of coordination, amnesia, drowsiness & dizziness, blurred vison, slurred speech, respiratory depression, coma and death.
- Narcan is ineffective against benzodiazepine overdoses. Narcan (naloxone) is an opioid antagonist used to reverse opioid overdoses, but it is ineffective against benzodiazepines like Bromazolam. Bromazolam is not an opioid, so Naloxone does not work on it. There is a reversal agent for benzodiazepines, but it is not carried by first responders and its use carries significant risks, unlike reversing an opioid overdose
