Man Found Guilty of Attempted Homicide for January 2021 Shooting

After deliberating for approximately 2 ½ hours, a jury found Hail A. Ali (28) guilty of Attempted Homicide (F1) for shooting a 32-year-old man in the head and back just after 2 p.m. at the 17 Express on Broad Street in the city of Erie in January of 2021.

During the trial, the Commonwealth, represented by Attorney Jessica Reger, presented extensive surveillance evidence recovered through the Erie Police Department’s investigation. Video showed that Ali left his house on E 23rd Street and walked to the 17 Express. Upon seeing the victim, Ali pulled out a handgun, walked up to the victim, and shot him in the head. Ali then shot him in the back, paralyzing him. Ali then walked up to the victim and shot at him multiple times while he was on the ground. The victim then crawled to a gas pump where he awaited medical help. Miraculously, despite the gunshot wounds, the victim survived.

Ali is scheduled to be sentenced on July 7, 2022 before the Honorable Judge David Ridge. He faces a statutory maximum of 20 - 40 years of incarceration for Attempted Homicide.
